Everyone has heard the saying “New Year, New Me”. Although it’s a great concept, not many people actually follow through with it. They may share their goals and intentions on social media or with family and friends, but many do not make an effort to become a “new” or better version of themselves. How can you become a new you? You can start by working on your personal brand.  Here are four steps you can take to create and develop your personal brand:

1) Think About What You Want Your Brand to Say About You

When you think of Ciroc, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Most of us would say Diddy. But when you think of Diddy, what words do you associate him? Style? Sophistication? If so, you have identified a few reasons why the makers of Ciroc chose Diddy to be the Vodka’s brand ambassador. When Ciroc was launched in 2003, it had terrible sales. However, when Diddy came on board in 2007, he made the vodka extremely popular and profitable. According to Forbes.com, Ciroc is now the second most profitable vodka in the world, as a result. Diddy became the face of Ciroc because the company that produces Ciroc, Diageo, believed that Diddy embodied exactly what the Ciroc brand represents, style and sophistication. This is the type of thinking you need to have when it comes to your personal brand. What do you want your personal brand to say about you? What words would you like your brand to be associated with? Quality? Success? Innovation? Once you’ve answer these questions, figure out the steps you need to take to make that a reality for your personal brand.

2) Self Assess

How can you build a personal brand unless you know your strengths, weaknesses, insecurities, fears, aspirations, and accomplishments? The best way to brand yourself is to know yourself. Who are you? What do you value? What do you stand for? If you can’t answer these questions, you need to take a step back and reflect.

3) Set Goals

Once you’ve figured out what you want your name to be synonymous with, who you are, and who you want to be, set goals that will help you enhance your personal brand. It can be go to at least one networking event a month. Or rebuild connections with past employers and internship coordinators. Every little bit helps. 4) Be Open to Evolving

Some people are so stuck in their “brand” that they don’t leave room for growth. This causes them to become stagnant and eventually irrelevant. Make sure you’re able to have a solid brand but also be open to making some tweaks and changes if necessary. This will allow your brand to evolve into something bigger and better.
